Music, politics, and history collide on the evening of June 2nd inside Powell's Books on Hawthorne, the largest used and new bookstore on Portland's east side. Musician, author, and Portland resident Dick Weissman will be singing copies of his new book, Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution: Music and Social Change in America. As a recording artist himself, Weissman will use musical recordings and a live performance to discuss how politics have influenced music and how music has changed America.
Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution is a comprehensive guide to the relationship between American music and politics. From songs of the immigrant experience to the rich diversity of African American music, the songs of the Great Depression, the long tradition of American antiwar music, the folk revival and protest songs of the 1960s, and more, Weissman explores this enormous topic with clarity and ease. Bringing the story right up to date, he examines hip-hop, punk, hardcore, heavy metal, contemporary Native American music, grunge, riot grrrl, rock en español, and more. Along the way, Weissman provides capsule biographies of important songwriters and performers, reveals the origins of landmark songs, and examines lyrics in a wide range of genres. At over 400 pages and with photos and illustrations throughout, this thorough yet accessible book is the definitive history of social change music in the U.S.
Dick Weissman is a musician, music historian, performer, composer, and recording artist, as well as the author of seventeen books including Making a Living in Your Local Music Market and Which Side Are You On?: An Inside History of the Folk Music Revival in America. His was an associate professor of music at the University of Colorado from 1990 to 2002 and now lives in Portland. Visit www.dickweissman.com for more information.
