This spring, only at the Hollywood Theatre, The Grindhouse Film Festival presents an original film series: REVENGE OF THE OLD SCHOOL KUNG FU MASTERS! After the massive success of the original Old School Kung Fu Masters series last year, here are four more amazing martial arts films. These are some of the greatest kung fu movies ever made, all from extremely rare 35mm prints.
Wednesday March 31st at 7:30
DEATH CHAMBER (aka SHAOLIN TEMPLE) (1976) The epic story of the destruction of the Shaolin Temple! A group of men undergo elaborate training at the Temple to learn a wide array of kung fu styles and deadly techniques. But, Shaolin has a traitor in its midst who is reporting to the evil Manchu government. Soon, there is a huge martial arts showdown when the Manchus declare Shaolin as enemies, and raid the temple to kill everyone inside. This is the “Ocean's 11″ of mid 70's Shaw Brothers films, with all of their major stars from the time (it also features Fu Sheng fighting wooden robots). Directed by Chang Cheh.
Wednesday April 7th at 7:30
INVINCIBLE ARMOUR (1977) Hwang Jang Lee is an evil white-haired, Eagle Claw villain and master of the impenetrable “Iron Armour Technique”. A young kung fu warrior is framed for murder, and goes on the run for his life. Now he must survive an onslaught of kung fu assaults, and master the Iron Finger Style to combat the crazed Eagle Claw master. This is wall to wall kung fu action featuring non-stop fight scenes, a ripped off Spaghetti Western soundtrack, and amazing fight choreography by Yuen Woo Ping.
Wednesday April 14th at 7:30
MASKED AVENGERS (1981) The Venom Mob is back! A gang of blood-drinking kung fu villains wear wicked devil masks and kill at will. A group of heroes set out to stop them, and are catapulted into vicious kung fu mayhem. The gang takes up residence in a booby-trapped laden temple that sets the stage for a series of bloody battles and gruesome impalements. The funkdafied kung fu showdown is guaranteed to melt your brain out of your skull. Some guy on imdb calls this movie “the stone coldest flick I've ever seen!” It's a perfect endorsement.
Wednesday April 21st at 7;30
MYSTERY OF CHESS BOXING (1979) The original Ghostface Killer is on the loose! A vicious villain with an unstoppable five element technique, Ghostface is killing off all his old rivals. Meanwhile, a young student tries to learn kung fu and is taken under the wing of an old chess master. The basics of chess prove to be the same as the basics of fighting, and eventually the heroes will have to fight Ghostface Killer, who verbally insults his opponents as he annihilates them. A true classic, and obvious favorite of the Wu Tang Clan, directed by Joseph Kuo (SEVEN GRANDMASTERS)
