Directed by ex-Sierra Maestra drummer Juan De Marcos Gonzalez, the Afro-Cuban All Stars have been the ambassadors of the ever-growing worldwide popularity of Afro-Cuban music. Their seminal 1997 album, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta, was the first to be recorded during the now-legendary Buena Vista Social Club sessions.
A multi-generational big band, with members ranging in age from 13 to 81, the Afro-Cuban All Stars incorporate the full spectrum of Latin dance music, including mambo, cha cha, salsa, rumba, son montuno, timba, guajira and bolero and their shows are simply not to be missed.

The real question is, Why wouldn’t I want to go see the Afro-Cuban All-Stars? Ever since my older brother (a drummer who loves African and Latin beats) introduced me to the band, I realized the beauty and energy of the band and the genre. Thanks to the Afro-Cuban All-Stars, I’m now in love with Cuban tunes and seek it out like it’s my job.

I would love to see this band. Latin Jazz and Salsa are my favorite kinds of music. I have some of the Afro Cuban All Stars’ records and I play them at home. I teach in Spanish to 5th graders and we often sing in Spanish. Some of the kids know some of the songs they sing. My wife’s birthday is April 8th and I would love to take her to it. She loves dancing to latin music. We go to the Cuban/Latin bands all summer. Please make her a happy birthday!
Thanks
John

I’m Cuban-born, but haven’t back since I moved to the states… any chance I get to relive a bit of home, I try not to pass up. I saw the Buena Vista Social club live and Ibrahim Ferrer a few years later and without a doubt the best time of my life. This would just be another great night to remember.
March 18, 2011 at 10:55
Never really heard these guys, but if it’s anything else like the youtube video, I would dig it and love to go.

March 18, 2011 at 13:13
Cuban-style salsa is my passion- I’ve been dancing/sweating/living it every Friday night and then some since I first discovered an amazing local club and many friends along with it. Me encanta la música cubana….I’d be up front dancing, showing the Afro-Cuban All Stars what PDX salseras are made of! Saw them once before and have been long awaiting their return. Gracias, con amor y paz…. :-)

I would love to take my 89 year old cuban mother to this show and have her dance with Juan de Marcos! This is the closest she’ll have been to her homeland in a very long time, and I would love to see the joy on her face when she hears this great band!
March 21, 2011 at 15:54
Was planning on hitting up this show with a friend. Love salsa and this band! Would be a fun night, but I gotta say that Lola and her 89yr mom should really beat out everyone. That would be a great night for them! (and me too if I win as well :))

March 26, 2011 at 11:03
Afro-Cuban All Stars is a one of a kind band that speaks to my soul. They are so unique; they pay homage to Cuban Son and all flavors of Latin music while incorporating new styles and trends. This is a band that I have turned to throughout my life during the happy, good, bad, sad, and nostalgic times. When I listen to their music I feel it in every part of my body and soul; there are hardly words to describe the feeling that their music gives me. I would love to be able to be in the same room with such an outstanding, talented group of individuals and get to feel the energy that is Afro Cuban All Stars. I need some good live music in my life. I have been working non-stop for the past year to earn my masters degree in elementary education and have not had much time to do anything fun for myself. Going to this show would give me to motivation and strength I need to finish out the school year with a bang! I want to be able to share with my students the love and passion I feel for music like Afro-Cuban All Stars. I hope to inspire children and reach the depths of their being the way that Afro-Cuban All Stars has done for me. Please send me to the Afro-Cuban show!!!
March 26, 2011 at 13:41

What an amazing opportunity to put to practice all of the sweat and blood (ok, so maybe just sweat) my fiance and I have been putting into our latin dance classes in preparation to wow our guests at our reception. I love the Afro Cuban all-stars! If I could get them to play at my wedding I would. This might be as close an opportunity as I get though :)

I’ve got more soul than I know what to do with – unfortunately the same thing can’t be said of my pocketbook. I grew up whispering soul and r&b songs in my room so my father couldn’t hear, and now I belt it out quite frequently in the car and shower. There are so many peeps on this list I would love to see – please make my dreams come true and help me shake my bootay at this music festival. Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease.

April 7, 2011 at 20:01
In 1983 I wandered down to a rainy Cinco de Mayo on the Portland waterfront and discovered Salsa!. After disco, after rock, after blues, after new wave, after Jazz – everything I had tried, it was love at first listen, and the dance – love at first sight. I became a hard core Salsa addict, finding dances when there was no place regular to go, no lessons, just a small group of folks mostly from other countries who spoke no English, that would get together with the one or two bands in town and celebrate with this infectious music. I was supporting this Genre when few knew about it or cared, long before the Buena Vista Social Club became international stars, I was dragging people to hear this music, supporting the bands, raving about this genre to anyone that didn’t leave the room. It has been a 28 year love affair that is not even close to being over. Yes, I would truly love to go.
April 7, 2011 at 21:33
A todo cuba le gusta… tickets for everyone?? Not possible but may the best draw win!
