The term “Sell Out” is generally something to be ridiculed. Any self respecting artist, musician, poet, rapper, director and the like considered a “Sell Out” lacks integrity, artistic conviction and employs any means necessary to satisfy the lowest common denominator. However, negotiation of this term may be useful, especially if it can coax a different connotation, one that asserts that the desire to make a living from one's artistic practice can be as emotional, conceptual, poetic and honest as any other reason for making art.
Micah Malone's exhibition “Sell Out” revolves around a large sculpture and the subsequent dissemination of that sculpture. Rounding out the show will be photographs made by capturing the sculpture's reflection, and a series of text pieces made from light rope. The works interweave with each other creating a branded cohesion, avant-garde strategies that reveal themselves as effective marketing devices.
Micah Malone is an artist and writer based in Portland, OR. He graduated with his M.F.A. from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in conjunction with Tufts University. He has exhibited at the Mills Gallery, Boston, MA, GASP Gallery, Brookline, MA, the Contemporary Arts Collective, Las Vegas and most recently had a solo exhibition at the Autzen Gallery at Portland State University. Malone writes the column "Marketwatch" for the arts journal Big, RED & Shiny, where he is also an editor. In addition, Micah is a regular contributor to “Critics Picks” at Artforum.com and various exhibition catalogs and brochures.
