The Preservation Hall Jazz Band travels worldwide spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. Formed by Allan and Sandra Jaffe in 1961, Preservation Hall Jazz Band was borne out of the rich New Orleans millieu that was to give the world Jazz music. Its founding members played with the likes of Jelly-Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden & Sweet Emma Barrett—legends that instilled in the group a committment to New Orleans roots music that still shines through today.

2011 is the 50th Anniversary of the incomparable Preservation Hall Jazz Band and they will be setting the tone for Soul’d Out Music Festival 2011, playing the opening night kick-off at The Crystal Ballroom with special guest, March 4th Marching Band.

Good golly, this sounds fabulous. I’d love to be there, celebrating music and spirit with the Preservation Hall Jazzers. Thanks!

  2.   Jeffree White Says:

I am a poor jazz musician and jazz student who has been learning and playing old time jazz a lot lately. This show would both be highly entertaining, and like jazz school!!! Plus, March 4th is about my favorite Portland act, and I haven’t seen them in almost a year! Pick me pick me!

  3.   Amanda Says:

    Charleston. Jitterbug. Boogie Woogie.
    *jazz hands*

  4.   Max Ritchie Says:

have seen pictures, read about, and heard many recordings from preservation hall and until I can visit and experience the place and the sounds first hand, this is the next best thing.
and of course, always love to see M4! both bands keep the true spirit of music alive, and I would love to attend.

  13.   Christina Says:

On my trip to New Orleans 10 years ago I tried and tried to go see the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, but it was always jam packed – I could only hope to catch a glimpse through the crowds that were also stuck outside wishing to get in. I’d love to get to see them in Portland!

  14.   Iris Says:

Preservation Hall Jazz!! They’re the best – last time I heard them was in New Orleans, 17 years ago, and I would love to hear them again.

  15.   db Says:

Was forced to leave New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. Am now about to relocate from North Carolina to Portland at the beginning of April. Would love for this to be my first Portland outing and to experience a little of NOLA once more. :)

  16.   Milly Says:

I have been to NOLA (as the locals say) dozens of times as a child and adult but have never been lucky enough to hear Preservation band live. It would be epic to see them in person. And, what Portlander doesn’t want to see M4?? Together these bands could chase away the worst of the rainy blues! Please let me soothe my soul :-)

  17.   Terry Moseley Says:

We all know what it means to miss New Orleans.

  18.   Stacey Says:

How fantastic it would be to see Preservation Hall Jazz Band… yes, please!!

I’ve never seen jazz like this, seems like an incredible show! I would love to experience this!

Grew up with a lot of jazz in my city and my life, miss it here in Portland sometimes. This will be a great show, whether I make it or not (hope I do though).

  25.   jacksoncafazzo Says:

I’m so glad this festival is gaining ground, we need more support for great music like this in Portland! Thanks for promoting the cool stuff ;)

  26.   Ben Says:

I’m missing that good N’awlins jazz

  27.   Jason Says:

    Just give “Al” the tickets.

  28.   Zach Says:

I moved here two days ago and found this article tonight. Jazz is the most beautiful music in the world. Portland is the most beautiful city in the world. Why would I not want to combine those two things and make my first few weeks here unforgettable? Pick me!

  29.   Derek Says:

Preservation Hall Jazz Band inspired me to play jazz 15 years ago, then recently, March 4th, inspired me to pull the dusty instrument out of its case and give it another go.

    Would love to go!

  30.   Randall Says:

I’ve never seen March 4th, but based on all the rave reviews, sounds like I shouldn’t keep putting it off… and my mom’s birthday is March 4th. Give your mother a random phone call… it’ll make her day!

  31.   Jana Says:

    Jazzilla… and Jazzoookey!
The Jazz Godzillas of New Orleans and their trusty marching guest. What a night this will be!

  32.   John Townsend Says:

Why would I like to attend?… Why would I not want to. It seems like yesterday when I heard March Fourth Marching Band for the first time as they marched out of the 2004 Crystal Ballroom Birthday Party show. I had missed the performance inside but caught what may have been even a better show out on the street where they rallied a crowd and had people dancing in the streets outside the annex.. And the preservation jazz band!! I grew up listening to my dad play the trumpet and cornet in a dixieland jazz band and truly do appreciate the classic jazz sound. In our modern age it is rare to be able to hear people who are still playing the more traditional sounds and styles of jazz…especially out here. Truly a sound that seems to be becoming a lost art as the oldtimers from that age are passing on. These tickets would truly be appreciated in these hands!!

  33.   Roddy jasa Says:

Got to see PHJB at High Sierra last year and was my fav show over Widespread, Black Crowes, and Dr Dog. They walked right into the crowd and formed a parade out of the venue. So much fun. Would love to take my special lady friend to see them.

  34.   Barbara Says:

Oh my, oh my, oh my! This looks AMAZING! I really would love to go and see these two phenomenal groups.

  35.   Tree Says:

A decade ago, when I was a street poet in the French Quarter, I spent hours letting the sweet sounds of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band wash over me and set my spirit to sparkling in the midst of a hard and grimy town. It will be a supreme treat to see them with my savior of the time, now also relocated to PDX, and with M4 as an opener… Wow. A poet has run out of words. :D

  36.   Alain Says:

Preservation Hall Jazz Band was the my introduction to NO jazz in the 60′s South as a baby boy. Would love to hear them all grown up.

  37.   Nickie Says:

I saw March 4th at Crown Room once, they were super awesome. Love to see them again, send me!

  38.   La Société des Monstres Célèbres Says:

We saw these guys in New Orleans in 2004 and it was one of the best musical experiences we’ve ever had. We’d be so thrilled to get to see them again here in our own town with the March 4 Marching Band!

  39.   Miranda Says:

It would make my month if I could go to this show

  40.   Eric Says:

Great bands… Me shake shake, jazzy jive.

  41.   Jane Says:

    The real deal!

  42.   Amy Says:

Sounds like so much fun!! Oh how we would love to go!

  43.   Jessica Says:

Don’t want to miss this great opportunity, these guys are the real deal!

  44.   Whit Sheard Says:

Fantastic bill! I have been unable to return to New Orleans for years and love the fact that these guys and Stanton Moore and the Rebirth folks have been including Ptown in their rounds.

  45.   Daniel P. Says:

I saw these guys years ago at Jazz Fest in NOLA and would do anything to see them again.

  46.   Saskia Says:

This sounds so amazing! I would really love to go to this show, and surprise my friend with a ticket for her Birthday!
