Portland Rising Tide and the National Wildlife Federation's Tar Free Oregon will host the Oregon premier of the award winning documentary SPOIL at the Hollywood Theater. Portland-based director Trip Jennings will introduce the film and hold a question and answer session with indigenous community member and documentary character Marven Robinson. Marven will participate via video conference from his home in the now-threatened, Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia.
The film follows Marven and a group of the world’s best photographers as they photo document one of North America's most pristine coastlines before a proposed pipeline bringing oil from the Alberta tar sands threatens to spoil it forever.
Director Trip Jennings said, ¬Å“As a National Geographic Explorer I have traveled all over the world, but I have never seen a place or culture more beautiful.¬Â The film first premiered at the 2011 Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival and won Best Environmental Film at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.
The oil company Enbridge Inc. has proposed an export pipeline from the Alberta tar sands to the British Columbia coastline. The tar sands and export pipelines have drawn international attention and controversy. Indigenous communities and environmental activists contend that if built, this Northern Gateway Pipeline and associated tanker traffic would mean an end to coastal people's way of life and the ecosystems that support it.
International Stop the Tar Sands Day is being observed in over 25 major cities around the world. Organizers say the aim of this international event is to raise awareness about the tar sands project and the global impacts of climate change.
