This Portland-based trio evolved from a long-time collaboration between keyboardist/composer Galen Clark and drummer Jesse Brooke. After spending the winter of 2005 in Brazil studying music, Jesse and Galen returned to Portland with an innovative approach towards composition and improvisation. With the addition of bassist Bill Athens, the Trio came to realize its inherent sound.
Based out of Seattle Washington, The Schwa came together after a years long courtship of a rotating cast of Seattle's all star improvisers eventually settling on percussionist Bob Rees, multi reedist Chris Credit, and upright bassist Geoff Larson. Vibraphonist, Justin Sorensen, conceived of an idea for a band that would fuse together ambient music and avant garde jazz in hope of better understanding time, place, and emotion. As a composer Sorensen uses the muse of common occurrences in daily life to strengthen his connection to place. The Northwest, famous for its dark, gray, rain soaked months are perfect for The Schwa as they aim to find all that is beautiful within them.
