Swing has returned to the Bossanova Ballroom! Every Wednesday, the local nonprofit Portland Lindy Society hosts a night of swing. Each evening kicks off with a free beginning dance lesson, (with the price of admission), taught by local swing dance instructors.

Like the Hawaiian Islands themselves, HAPA’s Pan-Polynesian music is an amalgam of infuences ranging from ancient genealogical chants to the strummed ballads of Portuguese fisherman, Spanish cowboys, and the inspired melodies and harmonies of the traditional church choirs of the early missionaries. Add to this a dose of American acoustic folk/rock, and you have what has been described as the “most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows!”… (Maui Times).

As it is with many journeys, you can unexpectedly end up in a much better place than you set out for. Such is the story of “Inside Out” – the third and newest release from the talented Portland, Oregon based trio Ellen, Gene & Jean.

In 1979, the Oregon Zoo became the first in America to host a summer concert series. This year, Oregon’s premier outdoor concert series celebrates its 35th anniversary with another lineup of world-class artists from June to September. It wouldn’t be summer in Oregon without an evening of great music at the zoo.

This promises to be a great evening of soulful Americana, rock and dirty extended guitar jams with two of Portland’s favorites! Ubiquitous guitar slinger Lewi Longmire and his Left Coast Roasters kick the night off with a rollicking set of original tunes (with some choice covers) to be followed by the masterful original songs of Sugarcane, a band that makes you feel like you’re welcome in their home from the first chords!
